We’ve talked about what Oughta-Pilots are. But do you know where they hang out? Just when you think you have them handled, one will sneak up and smack you in the face!

Oughta-PilotsTM live in the becauses of your life.

It’s human nature to look for reasons: reasons something did or did not happen, reasons why someone said something, reasons why you haven’t found your dream. Then you create a “because”.

“I’m still in this dead-end job because I need the security of a paycheck.”

“I have to be the best in my class because I need to get into a good college.”

“I have to stay with my husband/wife, we have children.”

Any of these sound familiar? They all have a because and they’re all Oughta-Pilots.

There is a difference between choice and decision. It may be semantics to some, but to those who get it, it’s huge. When you’re being reasonable, that is, having reasons for selecting one alternative over another, you’re making a decision. When you choose, you simply choose because you can. No reasons are necessary. Only decisions need justification.

I think we’ve all become masters at justification, just as we’ve become convinced we need to learn superior decision-making tools. How many workshops have you seen advertised lately offering to teach you the ins and outs of the process? Do you REALLY need to learn new ways to justify your actions?

Don’t you just love it when an offhand comment sends your mind off on a real adventure? I had that happen just a few hours ago and had to share the journey with all of you. This evening I was listening to a telecall with Shawn Driscoll and Linda Welch, one of the preview calls for the Launch My Dreams Business School event coming up in October in Los Angeles when Shawn said that one of the 3 Keys for Business Success is to be unique.  Okay, got that part, but then she mentioned that you need to understand what’s in your Secret Sauce, that thing you do that nobody else can or does do.

gearsThat smell of smoke in the air is from the speed the wheels in my head started turning.  I immediately got a flash of a chef tasting a sauce (I love watching Iron Chef on Food Network so the image is easy to conjure)to see if it needs any special seasoning, or even to see if it’s acceptable. The chef’s educated tastebuds can tell if the sauce is too spicy, too sweet, too sour or too bland for public consumption. So can we as entrepreneurs concoct a message or product that is too “out there”, too saccharine, too unpalatable or too bland for the public to consume.  The real task is to find something with just the right bite, just the right aftertaste and just the right appeal to make the consumer love it, get enraptured by it and want more and more or, at the very least, to repeat the experience.  I can’t wait to listen to Shawn’s next call on “How to Create a Signature Program and turn a Flood of Ideas into a Steady Stream of Income”. and see what sorts of jewels await me.  There’s still time to sign up for this free call. Go quick!

I love the metaphoric imagery of the secret sauce for your core message. To discover the ingredients in your recipe, ask yourself what you do that is uniquely YOU, what is it that nobody else does or could do if they wanted to. For me, it’s approaching left brain problems with right brain solutions.  I’m also incredibly good at finding existing resources and tweaking them till they can be used in ways even their designers never imagined.  The other ingredients to my secret sauce will remain secret unless you’d like to work with me in a coaching relationship. (I’m now accepting applications for three slots beginning in late August. Just send me an email at coaching@deborahbeatty.com.

I’d really like to see comments from some of you regarding your recipe for your own secret sauce. C’mon – give it a go!

I just returned from attending the Magnetize Your Audience workshop in Richmond, British Columbia.  What a pleasant surprise – I had seen Callan Rush and Justin Livingston in action before at the Master Trainer Camp I talked about on Solopreneur Insider. What a delight to see them step into their own and create the vision they spoke to there.

The weekend was packed with much more actual, USEABLE information than I had expected. What a wonderful surprise. I’m so used to going to marketing workshops and having it be all about marketing the speakers and their products. Callan and Justin each had their sections to present and admirably played to their strong suits to do it!

Justin is much more the technical, methodical, nuts and bolts side of the business and Callan is much lighter, emotional/empathic side. Together they address the whole banana and truly deliver an experience that I recommend to anyone whether you’re actually speaking to groups or not. When you walk away from this weekend, your head is  full of ideas and anticipation for your own dreams becoming real and you have a binder full of templates, tools and information that you can refer to when the emotional high dissipates.  (How many times have you come out of a workshop ready to rock the world with all the information you were exposed to, you get home and look through your notes and wish you could remember what A –> 45 means?)

I met some incredible people there. I can’t say I had a favorite, since they were all so very individual. There was Gio, the image consultant – (watch this guy, folks, he’ll be huge very soon!) Kala, a delightful gal who uses Huna to maximize human potential, JoAnne, a life coach who was such a little spark of excitement, you could definitely tell when she entered a room.  And the list goes on and on.

I learned TONS of great tips, crafted some solid information pieces (watch for my new ebooks and reports) but I got the biggest bang of the weekend during an exercise on Sunday night, led by Cindy Bertrand. (Her site’s not live yet, but keep clicking). This diminuitive dynamo is a professional puppeteer, therapist and author and has made a huge difference in my life.

The exercise we did (and one I will definitely include in my own workshops) was one where we worked in teams, recognizing that there was a part of ourselves we withhold from others, preventing us from playing full out and being authentically present with our audiences. We blew up balloons and with each tap we said goodbye to whatever it was we thought we were hiding. (For me, guess what, my secret is I’m fat! -never would have known to see me, huh?)  So simple, yet so powerful.  After the exercise was over, I felt and still do feel completely at ease with myself. There were other awareness exercises and experiences, too.  The whole weekend was very illuminating.

So now, my dear friends, here is the plan. I’m taking my show on the road.  I have the teleseries, Disconnect Your Oughta-Pilot beginning again 5/12 and 6/17.  I’m creating a 2 day workshop to be offered in July in the Tri-Cities area of Washington (Richland/Kennewick/Pasco) not sure which venue yet, but it will be special! I’ll let you all know the details as soon as I get them firm. Please send me an email or sign up for the newsletter so I can keep you informed easier than by blogging, and as always, please listen and comment on my radio show, Living A Created Life, Thursdays on Bitwire Media
