I LOVE bubbles. Bubbles shouldn’t be. They’re delicate, tiny impossibilities that exist in a world designed to destroy them – sharp edges, rough textures, hot surfaces. Even a teeny breeze or a finger too dry will cause them to explode and disappear. It’s this refusal to bow to the laws of such things as logic that appeals to me, I guess.
I’m sure you can relate to being told your dreams are impossible, there’s no way they’ll happen or some other line of garbage. Why do people do that? Are they so short-sighted that they can’t imagine something new into existence? Or that you just might be on to something. Wonder what was said when Thomas Edison said he wanted to invent a light bulb, or Einstein came up with some of his more odd ideas.
The sight of bubbles glimmering in the wind as they head off to meet their destinies is something that fills the tiniest child with wonder and can bring tears to my eyes, even at my age. Not sure if any of you have watched the movie “Toys” with Robin Williams, L.L. Cool J and Joan Cusack., but bubbles figure prominently in the movie as a barometer of happiness and even innocence.
On the surface, it’s a story of a man who is asked to take over the reins of his brother’s toy factory after his death. Michael Gambon plays Lt. General Leland Zevo, a career military man who is obviously out of his element in a factory manufacturing toys that bring as many smiles to the workers creating them as their intended owners. I’ll let you watch the movie itself to see the story (it’s worth it) but bubbles for me form the Greek Chorus in this passion play.
In the Wizard of Oz, Glinda the good witch travels by bubble. In fact, I couldn’t find a single instance of bubbles supporting the dark side. (I guess they don’t have them available to the Sith or to Darth Vader?)
I stumbled upon this video. It made me smile. I know Stinson Beach very well. Made me a little homesick. I’ve seen these people there.
So the next time someone tells you your dreams are impossible, that they cannot happen, blow them a bubble or show them this blog post. Your comments?
